    Part number structure

What is your experience with part number (abbrev.PN) structure?

In the past days I joined some discussion about that topic. So far I believe that PN should be human friendly. Of course part numbering policy depends on needs and information system features.

If we have for example two Electric Motors, one with 10HP and the second with 15HP, we might give them PNs like:
EM10HP for Electric Motors with 10HP
EM15HP for Electric Motors with 15HP

I guess looks better than non significant PNs for instance:
185643 for Electric Motors with 10HP
185477 for Electric Motors with 15HP

For people dealing with PNs like warehouse or material control, it is very easy to remember, easy to handle, and I hope easy to enter in system.

Which PN policy do you use?
